No one deserves to have to spend Thanksgiving alone, cold and hungry.

But unfortunately, economic struggles affect thousands across the Rome and Floyd County area, so much so that individuals and families are unable to partake in the happy festivities.

In an effort to reach out to those in need, the 24th annual Love Feast will be Thursday at the Rome Civic Center. The free dinner will begin at 11 a.m. and

will last until 2 p.m. or until the food runs out.

The Love Feast is sponsored by the Concerned Citizens of Rome and Floyd County, and chairman the Rev. Terrell M. Shields said they still need donations.

“Based on the economy, the unemployment rate and all, we’re looking at doing as many as we did last year,” Shields said. “We can use all we can get.” 

Shields said monetary donations are needed, as well as cakes, pies and other desserts. Food donations can be dropped off at the Civic Center after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

To offer comfort and shelter from the cold, donated coats and sweaters are needed. Clothing can be dropped off at the Civic Center on Wednesday between 5 and 8 p.m.

In 2011, the feast served 3,000 people from across the area. Traditional Thanksgiving cuisine will be served along with pizza donated by Pizza Hut, an event sponsors. Other sponsors are Redmond Regional Medical Center and Southeastern Mills.

Volunteers make the event possible. Time slots are from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; or from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are asked to call 706-234-2091 to find out when they are needed. 

Those wishing to contribute to the event may send checks payable to “Thanksgiving Love Feast” to P.O. Box 161, Rome, Ga. 30161. 

“We get a joy out of seeing it happen,” said Shields. “It’s kind of hectic putting it together but seeing it come full force, we enjoy it.”
