A Rome man drove himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound and told police he was robbed while on East 18th Street, according to a Rome police report.

According to the report:

The man said he was working in the area and turned onto East 18th Street when a white, older Buick Regal passed him then pulled in front of him.

Three males got out of the vehicle and approached him. One of the men had a silver or black semi-automatic handgun. Then one of the three men demanded money and when the complainant said “no,” he was shot in the chest.

The man’s vehicle was found in the parking lot of the hospital and the driver’s side window was busted out. A red brick with concrete was lying on the front passenger seat.

Police said they found no glass in the roadway or shell casings.

A man who was sleeping in his van in the area told police he had not seen or heard anything like what the man described happening there.

A call has been placed to Floyd Medical Center for an update on the man’s condition.
