The burial ground in Spanish Fort was officially dedicated Friday on the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which prompted the United States to enter World War II.
The commissioner of the state Department of Veterans Affairs, Clyde Marsh, said picking Friday for the dedication ceremony was easy because it is already a day of remembrance.
The Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery is the first such state-designated facility. Al.com reports it was built using a $7 million grant.
Prior to its completion, families had to travel to Pensacola, Fla., Biloxi, Miss, or near Birmingham to bury a loved one at a veterans cemetery. An existing veterans cemetery in Mobile reached capacity in 1962.
