I would like to take this opportunity to announce and to congratulate the 6 coaches recently voted by their peers into this year’s GACA Hall of Fame Class of 2013, according to the Terry Rogers, Executive Secretary of The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, when he announced the 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees.
There are many worthy candidates each year, but only the top 4-6 are selected yearly by voting of the selection committee. This year’s selection committee has done another outstanding job in selecting the “cream of the crop”, those coaches with outstanding credentials and leadership qualities who through their years of service have changed the landscape of high school sports in our great state. This is truly an outstanding group of coaches who have won many games, state championships, and honors along the way, but have also distinguished themselves in giving so much of themselves to their communities, fellow coaches, and to the athletes they have coached through their many years of service.
This year’s list of 6 future inductees includes: Charles Winslette, Football; Leslie Baker, Football; Chuck Miller, Basketball; Joe Williams, Basketball; Billy Peek, Golf; and Bill Holleman, Soccer.
The GACA Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed on a coach in the state of Georgia by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association. The induction ceremony will be held in Dalton, Georgia on Saturday, June 1, 2013, starting at 10 a.m. The GACA Hall of Fame is located in the Northwest Trade and Convention Center in Dalton, Ga. and has been recognized and endorsed as the official and permanent Georgia High School Coaches Hall of Fame by the House of Representatives, the Mayor and City Council of Dalton, the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners, and the Georgia High School Association. The GACA, currently with 6000 plus members, was formed in 1938 and the Hall of Fame holds the plaques of some of the best coaches, role models, and leaders of young men who have coached in Georgia High School athletics in football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, track, and soccer throughout our state’s storied athletic history.

Winslette is 1 of only 5 coaches who played on a State Championship team (Putnam County, 1967) and later was the Head Coach of a State Championship team (West Rome, 1985 and Greene-Taliaferro, 1993)
Winslette is 1 of only 12 Georgia High School Head Football Coaches to win a State Championship at two different Georgia High Schools
Coach Winslette is the only coach in Georgia High School history to win 250 games while leading 4 teams to the Georgia High School semi-finals and leading 2 of those schools to state titles (West Rome 1985 and Greene-Taliaferro 1993)

Winslette’s oldest son Matt was a 1st team All-American center at Georgia Southern University in 1998, and is currently the offensive line coach at Peachtree Ridge HS in Gwinnett County. He played at Georgia Southern for current Georgia Tech Head Football Coach Paul Johnson and assistant Mike Sewak.
Matt was a 2 way starter at Greene-Taliaferro and shared the 1993 State Championship with his dad, and at season’s end was chosen as a 1st team Atlanta Journal-Constitution All State. Matt, serving as offensive coordinator at Peachtree Ridge High School in 2006, helped the Lions win the AAAA State Championship.
Matt and his wife Jennifer are expecting their first child in March, 2013.
Jeff, Coach Winslette’s middle son, was the deep snapper on the 1993 Greene-Taliaferro Tiger State Champion team and currently works as a transportation scheduler/dispatcher at Southern Ag Carriers out of Albany, GA., which serves 48 states. His boss there is former Auburn offensive line coach Hugh Nall, who was also a star center on the Georgia National Championship Team of 1980. Jeff, his wife, Carol, and daughter Heidi reside in Tifton, GA
Brad, Winslette’s youngest son, was a ball boy for the 1993 Championship Greene County squad. He later was a starting linebacker for his dad at Tift County High School, where the Blue Devils in 1997 beat defending champion Brookwood in the Georgia Dome and played Parkview for the State AAAA Championship. Brad played his college football as a linebacker at Valdosta State University.
Coach Winslette’s wife, Christine, works for the Greene County Schools as a paraprofessional. She has spent her entire career working with children in kindergarten and 1st grade, and except for 7 years with Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, working with young children has always been her greatest passion
Coach Winslette is currently coaching at Monroe-Area High School, working with the offense. The Hurricanesmade it into the 4th round of the AAAA playoffs, and ended their season this past Friday night at 12-2 in theState Semi-Finals. This season they won the Region Championship for the 1st time since 1969, their 1stRegion Championship in 43 years. They made the final 4, in what must certainly be considered the best year in Monroe-Area High School football history.
