The Rome City Commission tied up some loose ends Monday, their last meeting of 2012, but the issue of backyard chickens wasn’t one of them.

Commissioners tabled Chris and Erin Lewis’ request for a special use permit to keep hens at their Hycliff Road address. A ruling isn’t expected until after the Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission makes its recommendation in January on urban poultry regulations.

The Lewises brought about a dozen supporters to the public hearing, and opponents filed a petition with signatures from about 20 households. The board voted in October to allow the Lewises to keep their four hens until the issue is resolved.

City Attorney Andy Davis said there would not be another public hearing on the Hycliff Road application, but one would be required if the planning commission recommends a change to the zoning ordinance.

The planning commission meets next at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 3 in City Hall, 601 Broad St. The meeting is open to the public.

In other actions, the board signed off on the Downtown Development Authority’s plans to provide a $123,000 low-interest loan for a new elevator and roof repairs at 234 Broad St., the location of Harvest Moon restaurant.

Commissioner Bill Collins said owners Ginny and Doc Kibler are talking with a potential buyer for the restaurant. The money comes from the DDA’s revolving loan fund, created to encourage renovations and investment in downtown properties.

County Manager John Bennett also announced the garbage pick-up schedule for the holidays.

Monday and Friday routes will be unchanged for the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, but Tuesday routes will be picked up with the Thursday run. Yard waste carts won’t be picked up on Dec. 24-27 or Jan. 1-3.
