The Charleston Library Society's operation will bind new editions of historic books by hand. It will also repair books in the library's collection of tens of thousands of volumes dating to the 15th century.
The society's new bookbinder, Brien Biedler, has been with the library since August. He says there are several lifetimes of work at the library located in Charleston's historic district.
The library was established in 1748 and thought to have as many as 100,000 volumes. But no one is really sure because most of the volumes are included on old card catalogues and the library has embarked on a multi-year effort to tally its collection.
