ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities say they quietly moved guests to safety at a Union City motel before bursting in and surprising a fugitive wanted in the slaying of his ex-wife in the Atlanta suburbs.

Gavin Duffy, a supervisory inspector with the U.S. Marshals Service, tells The Associated Press that John Stephen Kristofak had no idea he would soon be apprehended until law officers were at his door early Thursday morning.

Duffy said there was a brief struggle before Kristofak was taken into custody in his motel room, but there were no major injuries. He said the arrest was made possible by efforts of the Cobb County Sheriff's Office and Union City police.
