The competitors were fierce, running with weights around their waist and doing squats before heading back down the line again.

The Three Rivers Throwdown, a fitness competition modeled after CrossFit competitions, took place Saturday at Unity Christian School on Ga. 53 with about 200 spectators cheering the competitors on in a variety of events.

This event was not a CrossFit sanctioned event, said Russ Greene a spokesman for CrossFit Inc.

CrossFit UCS is sponsored by Unity Christian School and occupies about 12,000 square feet at the school’s main gym.

The CrossFit methodology uses constantly varied functional movements such as squatting and lifting, pulling and pushing, running and jumping and rowing in a variety of combinations all carried out with a high intensity.

Thirty-eight teams competed in the competition — a total of 152 people. There were about 50 volunteers, and several vendors were there to show their wares.

“The overall goal of CrossFit is increased work capacity, the ability to get the most work done in the shortest amount of time possible,” said Jessica Bost, one of the coaches. “Each event capitalized on that concept in a little bit different way. The first event was a time-goal event, individual competitors worked to complete their workout of the day in the shortest time possible. In the second event partnered competitors worked to complete as many rounds as possible of their WOD in the given amount of time (12 minutes). In the third event, the teams worked through an obstacle course with the goal of completing as many reps as savior of the final movement.”
