UPDATE: Floyd County, Rome City schools open as usual today; Darlington opening late

Update: Both Rome and Floyd County school systems will open as usual today as the threat of freezing rain diminishes this morning.It was 37 degrees at 5:30 a.m.

Previously posted: Freezing rain is in the forecast, beginning about 6 a.m. Friday, and due to the potential for inclement weather and icy road conditions, Darlington School will open at 10 a.m.

Faculty and staff should report at 9:30 a.m.

The International Fair will begin at 1 p.m. in the Huffman Athletic Center.

No word yet from Rome and Floyd County schools but Bartow County schools have decided not to open.

The Cartersville Patch is reporting Excel Christian Academy also has canceled Friday's classes.

The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. for most of north and central Georgia.

Friday’s forecast for the local area calls for a 60 percent chance of rain throughout the day, with temperatures as low as 33 degrees and a high of 42 degrees. Rain beyond 1 p.m. is not expected to be freezing.

The following day’s forecast is both drier and warmer. Saturday is expected to be sunny with a high of 48 degrees.

Once again Rome and Floyd County are the only school systems in the area to exercise common sense and good judgement in keeping school open. In this day of instant communication, why do school systems make decisions the day or night before without complete information and based on speculation about what might happen. Rome and Floyd County students and teachers will enjoy their full spring break while those in neighboring communities are forced to attend makeup days.

Agreed.. and parents that are unsure about school closings or weather issues, they need to make alternate arrangements to take care of their children. It is not the school's responsibility to give them hours worth of notice but the parent's job to take care of their children. If schools stay open, cancel the alternative arrangements. If they have new drivers and are concerned about roads, have them carpool or drive them.
