Floyd County got through a daytime tornado Wednesday with just 10 Georgia Power outages remaining by 9 p.m., but 20 minutes later, strong gusts of wind caused downed trees and left 2,900 customers without electricity.

Anne Kaiser, vice president of Georgia Power’s northwest region operations, said it was too soon to know when power will be restored.

As of 10 p.m., the area in the county with the most power outages was Horseleg Creek, Kaiser said.

Most downed trees and power lines were on the south end of the county around Silver Creek, according to Michael Skeen, director of Floyd County Public Works. Among the areas hit in that part of the county were Ridgeview Drive, Harmony Road, Wax Road and Chulio Road.

Two county crews were out working with Georgia Power crews late Wednesday to remove trees that had taken down live power lines when they fell, Skeen said.

Kaiser said she didn’t know exactly how many Georgia Power crews were working in Floyd on Wednesday, but there were “well over 100 crews deployed.”

The city of Rome only had two downed trees — one on King Bee Circle and another on Iron Street — and no major traffic issues.

“We were very lucky to have only two trees down,” said Jamie McCord, director of the Rome Public Works Department. “I attribute that to there being very few unhealthy or weak trees left after all the bad weather we’ve had over the last two or three years.”

A wind advisory remains in effect through midnight tonight throughout north and central Georgia and there are scattered reports of trees down in Floyd County.

The National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of winds at 15 to 25 mph this evening with gusts up to 40 mph.

Shortly after 9 p.m., Rome and Floyd County crews began responding to reports of trees down at U.S. 411 and Bagwell Road, 86 Ridgeview Drive, Mathis Drive and Chulio Road, Chulio at Twickenham, on Reeceburg Road, in Silver Creek and on Martha Berry Boulevard.

Power lines appear to be affected at a number of the sites. Check back for updates.

Winds this strong can down weakened trees and make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. The NWS is urging extra caution tonight.
