SPEAKING OF TENNIS, sort of, the latest transparent ploy in the Atlanta Falcons’ effort to get partial public funding support for their proposed billion-dollar new stadium is the floating of “warnings” that Los Angeles was interested in luring the football team. The City of Angels is the largest in the nation without its own NFL franchise, and going unsaid is that a new stadium would be part of any relocation deal.

Then Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed made a point of individually warning the city’s council members of what might be afoot … in the process naturally alerting state legislators, who have to say grace over what is being proposed regarding diversion of the hotel tax, of the same dire peril.

Greater Rome, as most know, for some years has tried and failed to get outside state money backing for the proposed Tennis Center of Georgia.

Perhaps Mayor Evie McNiece should start whispering that Centre, Ala., has expressed interest in the tennis center if Rome can’t get the deal done.

No Tennis Center! If it so great and it is so grand, private industry would have already built it. The fact is this community can not support such a large sports complex without some guarantees of its use. Sure it would be novel the first couple of years and then people would realize just how far out of the way Rome really is and it would dry up just like everything else in this little decaying town.
