Principals: ‘Normal’ Monday follows RIF announcements

Once someone’s been pegged as a RIFed Floyd County teacher, it can’t be easy to walk into your classroom, tell your students to open their textbooks and pick up where you left off.

But that’s exactly what happened Monday morning, said several Floyd County principals, who indicated that it was business as usual the moment the first bell echoed through the halls.

The Floyd County Schools Reduction In Force plan eliminates 119 staff members for the 2014 school year, and principals were tasked Friday with notifying those who will be cut.

Some schools have more RIFed personnel than others — the most being at Pepperell High School, with a total of 10 who won’t be returning. Model Middle School has just one.

The RIF process was conducted on a systemwide basis, not on a school-by-school level, said Tim Hensley, assistant to Superintendent Jeff McDaniel.

Pepperell High School Principal Phil Ray said everything seemed to run smoothly on Monday.

“It’s pretty close back to normal,” he said. “I think the weekend helped some. We’re back to our normal attendance — teachers and students both. A few questions still exist, but we’re trying to answer all we can.”

Ray said it helped that Friday was an early release day for Floyd County students.

The Georgia Department of Education allows each school sys-

tem five early release days per school year. On those days, classes last for one hour rather than 90 minutes, and students are dismissed at 1 p.m. For the rest of the day, parents are invited to have parent-teacher conferences.

Ray said he wasn’t aware of any major disruptions in the classrooms that were caused by the RIF.

“I haven’t detected anything or have anything to report other than normal here,” Ray said.

Aaron Anderson, principal at Alto Park Elementary School, told seven staff members on Friday that their jobs will be gone. Anderson said that, in the face of bad news, the employees

demonstrated excellent professionalism.

“I’m really proud of our staff,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of school year ahead of us this year. Obviously our leaders had some difficult decisions to make and have been in my thoughts and prayers.”

He said he was glad it was the principals’ jobs to deliver the RIF announcements.

“These are colleagues we work closely with every day, but I wouldn’t have wanted them to hear that from anyone else but me,” Anderson said. “I’m happy that we had the weekend to kind of absorb the changes that appear to be coming.”

There are quite a few changes on the horizon, such as the middle schools switching from block schedules — four classes lasting 90 minutes each — to a hybrid between block and period scheduling.

That will allow the restructuring of Connections classes such as computer, art, technology, foreign language and band. Fewer teachers will be required to deliver those classes, since some will be able to teach at more than one school under the new schedule.

The same can be said for K-12 elective classes, said Hensley.

“The new period schedule will require fewer teachers for electives at the high school level as well,” he said, adding that the restructuring of high school electives may allow for some keyboard instruction at the elementary school level.

Glenn White, principal at Model High School, said the quality of education for students would not suffer because of the RIF.

“I really believe we have some outstanding teachers that go beyond the call of duty, and they will make sure our kids have everything they need in order to be successful and in order to learn,” he said. “We will continue to provide quality education; … that will not change.”

Why should Bartow be lionized for having no RIFs this year? I know for a fact that they RIFed very heavily in 2010 and again in 2012. Are they any better because they did it earlier? Same pain for teachers either way.

Normal?? If principles think teachers are going about business as usual, then they aren't spending any time in the classroom. RIF'd teachers are "phoning it in" for the rest of the year. The principles were given a list of responses to media questions so that parents can feel better about their child's education while teachers are spending every day worrying about how they will support their families in 3 months. It's a very sad situation all around.

I'm pretty sure the article was directed toward the behavior of students. That's what I got from it anyway!!

I'm sorry for those who lost their jobs, but you're lashing out in ALL directions.

The Rome News-Tribune has made efforts to reach out to those staff members affected by the RIF and would be more than happy to speak with anyone on the record about these issues.

We understand that this is a very difficult time for those who have been RIFed, there are a lot of uncertainties and many questions remain unanswered. We also know that there are reasons why a RIFed staff member would be hesitant to be interviewed. However, that side of the story can't be reported unless we have a source who is willing to be heard.

Is there a list somewhere of the FC staff who got reduced and/or moved around. I know you can make an open records request but I was wondering if it can be found online?

Absolute disgrace that this would be posted! Those of us that have been RIF'd, yes I am one of them, are very upset over this article! You say normal, NORMAL? No-absolutely not! There is NOTHING normal about what is going on in these schools right now! We are hurt, angry, and concerned! Those of us who do not have the security of a job next year are wondering what "tomorrow" brings, and those that do have a job are wondering where they will be next year. So, to respond to this article...absolute incorrect information! Our "normal" was taken away when the board decided to spend money on useless things such as a new desk for the superintendent!!!! Our "normal" is long gone and sadly enough, who knows when it will return!

You are in my prayers! Thankfully, I still have a job, but God only knows where! It's easy for the principals to say it's normal because they still have their 6-figure, or thereabouts, income. I'm sad for the great people that lost their jobs, I'm sad for the students that will inevitably suffer due to packed classes (anyone that thinks we have 12 students to a class need to come visit), I'm sad for families that will now have to do without because of job loss, and I'm mostly sad that the principals and "higher-ups" think we're all back to normal!

Don't forget these people now have 3 months to look for other work, instead of 1 month. And they're not all teachers with transferable skills and good education.

Yes, it's sad. But it could have been sadder. Worry instead about the students who may try to escape into the larger world with just a Georgia education that no one will trust:

I agree with Romanlife: the headline is insensitive to the plight of the laid-off teachers; and it is unnecessarily sensational.

IMHO, the article describes the professionalism of the teachers who obviously realize the necessity to continue to teach rather than wallow in self-pity or whatever. Too bad that for so many that professionalism won't pay the rent next year.

It may have been a "Normal" Monday, but this choice of headline was insensitive and hurtful to the many that lost their jobs on Friday. Many were hurt by this and won't get back to a Normal day for while.

The downturn in the economy has been hammering our local business operators for about five years. Many of them have been going through their own hell for years. And now it is hitting government workers and our teachers. At this time we all need to stick together, work together and support each other. And slowly, one day at a time, we all really will get back to a very pleasant Normal.

This is a tired talking point. Fed and state governments have been furloughing workers for the past 4 years. At least responsible local school systems have been dealing with these shortfalls with RIFS and furloughs over the past 4 years. Bartow County is reportedly having No RIFS this year and possibly little or no furloughs as they began dealing with the crisis early. Sounds like Floyd County has not been tightening as belt as much over the past few years and now the compounded pain is being felt by a large number of employees.
