Who is answering the questions? Debbie Bell, owner

What is the primary purpose of your business? To cut hair, provide facials and shaves. We also offer a variety of hair care accessories.

What is the business background of the owners? I have worked at the Forrest Barber Shop for 28 years. I actually apprenticed in this shop.

Why did you start (or purchase) this particular business? I just feel like the Forrest Barber Shop is such an important, historical element for downtown Rome Barbering is also such a wonderful, traditional business and I felt like it was very important to carry on the heritage and rich tradition of our shop.

What makes your business unique? We’ve been here for almost 100 years. Next year, 2014 is our 100th anniversary and we’re planning some special things for our celebration. I can’t tell you right now but it will be a lot of fun. Another thing that is different is that for the last several years, all of our barbers have been women. I was actually the first woman barber here. We also offer an upper back and shoulder massage after each haircut. Some folks tell us the massage is the main reason they come in.

What do you enjoy most about your chosen profession? I think the continuation of our relationship with so many families here in Rome. We have served several generations of so many families in the community. I always enjoy visiting with our customers and enjoy their company while they’re in the shop.

What has been the biggest or most interesting challenge to overcome as a small business owner? Keeping it competitive as far as pricing, just keeping our head above water in a difficult economy.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? We just enjoy being here for the community and have cherished the many relationships that we have been able to establish over so many years. We hope our customers and everyone else in Rome will stay in touch often as we make plans for our 100th anniversary celebration throughout 2014.
