A car that had shots fired into it early Thursday in Rome was found Friday morning burning in an abandoned field off U.S. 411 South, Floyd County police said.

A Cave Spring officer first responded about 1:50 a.m. Friday to the burning car off Morgan Dairy Road. No one was around when he arrived, and the fire was soon extinguished, reports state.

Floyd County police say they spoke with the Cave Spring officer and learned the burned car had shots fired into it Thursday morning outside a Reece Street home. They then called the car’s owner, who knew nothing about her car being burned.

According to reports, shots were fired into the car about 12:05 a.m. Thursday. The car’s owner last saw her vehicle about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when her boyfriend used it to take her to work.

The boyfriend then went to a friend’s home on Reservoir Street, where he left the keys on the car’s floorboard.
