Carl Green, who capped a 35-year career with the Rome Fire Department by retiring as fire chief in 1990, died early Tuesday morning.

The Gordon County native and Rome High School graduate was promoted to chief in November, 1988 after serving more than eight years as deputy chief.

Green began his career with the Rome Fire Department in 1955 just before his 24th birthday.

The fire training center on North Avenue is named for him, along with fellow former chiefs Bobbie McKenzie and Raymond Smith.

Henderson and Sons Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements, which are currently incomplete.
