A man was taken to Floyd Medical Center after apparently falling out of the back of a pickup truck on Alabama Highway Monday night.

According to Capt. George Lemming of the Floyd County Police Department:

A pickup truck was apparently loading up an all-terrain vehicle in a wooded area on Alabama Highway at Fosters Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Lemming said a man, either seeing the incident and thinking it was a theft or a person who got into an altercation with the subjects, jumped into the back of the pickup as it sped away.

"You can see marks down in the gravel where it spun out and then drove up onto the highway," Lemming said. "When it got to the road and started to speed off, the guy apparently fell out of the back of the truck and hit his head."

EMTs arrived on the scene and treated the man, who was lying in the highway when emergency crews arrived. Police said the man suffered a large laceration to the back of his head but he was conscious and talking when emergency workers arrived. He was taken to Floyd Medical Center.

Police found one Polaris ATV on the median next to Alabama Highway, and a Yamaha ATV was found in the wooded area where the incident apparently started. Both were towed away by a wrecker.

Lemming said police are still investigating the incident.
