Fire at the DeSoto Theater
Nearby businesses were evacuated as four fire engines were called to aid this historic theater.
The day after a fire damaged the historic DeSoto Theatre in downtown Rome, the building was still without power as officials assessed the damage, said Paul Griffin, president of the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation.

“Right now it’s mostly electrical damage,” Griffin said Wednesday. “The power will be off until we can replace the main service to the building.”

The cast and crew of “Peter Pan,” which is scheduled to be performed in late August, are rehearsing at Trinity United Methodist Church. The fire is not expected to delay the production, Griffin said.

An electrical short caused a transformer to catch fire Tuesday, said Capt. Phil Litton with the Rome-Floyd Fire Department.
