A longtime downtown business is in the process of closing its doors. According to signs painted in the windows, The White Rabbit, 538 Broad St., is hopping away.

Judith Lucas said Tuesday she’s got a new grandchild and wants to be able to spend more time with him.

“I hate to close, but there’s just times when you want to retire, and you have other interests, and that’s what’s happened in my life.”

Lucas doesn’t know yet when she’ll close her doors. That will depend on the success of her liquidation sales.

A Facebook posting for the business reads: “Please join us for our 401K sale starting July 21st and choose from items that have never been on sale.”

The White Rabbit was started in the Rivers Place mall in the late 1980s and had moved to its current location at the corner of Broad Street and Sixth Avenue by 1990.

The store has been a staple for those in the antiques and reproductions market for more than two decades. The liquidation sale is slated to get under way at 10 a.m. today.

“Rome, Georgia, has been so supportive all these years; it’s been a wonderful positive experience,” Lucas said.

Judy and the girls, I have been a shopping at the White Rabbit for many, many years and it will be missed. How much for the "horse"...lol.
