Led by the red-hot Phil Gosselin, the Braves were able to gain some payback Tuesday night.

Still, the big question is: Did the atonement come too late to really make a difference?

With Gosselin pounding out three hits and scoring three runs, the Braves hammered the first-place Greenville Drive, 8-1, in the back half of a doubleheader at State Mutual Stadium.

Jeff Lorick, making a spot start, pitched four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, and relievers Thomas Berryhill and Andrew Wilson combined to limit Greenville to one run the rest of the way.

The victory enabled the Braves to avoid being swept by the Drive and put a positive ending on a mostly disappointing homestand that featured five losses in eight games.

The untimely swoon contained three losses to the Drive, including a 4-0 defeat in the opener of Tuesday’s twinbill.

The Braves had initially hoped this four-game series would allow them to revitalize their playoff hopes.

Instead, it essentially erased them.

The Braves — who have an off day today before opening a series in Asheville on Thursday — have fallen six games behind the Drive with seven weeks remaining in the season.

In order to overcome the deficit, the Braves will need for several players to catch fire in the same manner as Gosselin.

The former University of Virginia star boosted his batting average to .336 with his three-hit performance in Tuesday’s nightcap, and has now gone 18-for-47 (.383) in the past 12 games, with four three-hit games in that stretch.

Jace Whitmer also had three hits and drove in two runs in the series finale against the Drive to push his average to .318.

Riann Spanjer-Furstenberg finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Braves, who scored one run in the first inning, two in the third and then broke the game open with a four-run fourth.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Braves committed four errors in the first inning, which led to four unearned runs that accounted for all of the game’s scoring.

Rome lefty Brett DeVall (6-7) committed one of the errors when his mishandled a ball hit by Greenville leadoff batter Jeremy Hazelbacker.

Shortstop Edward Salcedo them made a throwing error on the following play, and Joe Leonard was charged with a throwing error two batters later. Jake Hanson capped the error-fest when he misplayed a groundball that aided Greenville’s four-run rally.

After that, DeVall was sharp, working five scoreless innings. He allowed just four hits overall, finishing with three walks and one strikeout.

But the Braves offense provided no support, mustering just four hits.
